Your guide to going plastic bag free at Highbury Barn

Dear Trader Can you help sort out our plastic bag problem? Plastic bags cost traders money to give out and they make lethal litter. In London 1.6 billion plastic bags are handed out by shopkeepers each year (and just 0.05% are recycled). The rest end up in landfill where they can take 1,000 years to rot down . The info below will help you find wholesale suppliers of alternatives to plastic bags. Could you switch to paper, corn starch or potato starch bags instead of giving out plastic bags? Could you wait for customers to ask before you give them a bag? Or could you reward customers who bring their own reusable bags in?

Why do this now? Well, a survey in December 2008 found that 8 out of 10 of your customers wanted Highbury Barn to go plastic bag free, and nearly every one asked would pay a few pence for a biodegradable bag.   More than 100 towns are already either plastic bag free or working towards this. Even in nearby Newington Green, shops are on the way to becoming plastic bag free. With your help Highbury Barn could be the first shopping zone in Islington to say goodbye to dishing out plastic bags that are likely to be thrown away soon after your customer gets home . Even the supermarkets are starting to charge for bags, so people are getting used to this idea.

8 THEY'RE WORKING ON A PLASTIC BAG FREE HIGHBURY BARN

“I wholeheartedly support all efforts to make Highbury Barn plastic bag free. Highbury is one of the great London neighbourhoods and its shops bring people together. And they're such good shops--no need to go to the supermarket: better deals, better time, better environment, better life all achieved by shopping in your own neighbourhood. The shops set standards in so many ways, so let's do it with plastic bags--get rid of them and make shopping in the Barn even less damaging.”
Sheila Dillon, presenter of Radio 4'sThe Food Programme

“I don't give out plastic bags. I support this idea 100 per cent.”

Yehia El Nemer , owner of Oasis café, Highbury Fields

Did you know that since 1 June 2009 the Natural Health Store (Five Boys) charges customers 5p if they want a plastic bag? Godfreys the Butcher, La Fromagerie, Da Mario and Highbury Vintners all sell their own reusable bags?

“We always ask what bag customers want. We want to encourage people to bring their own bags so we don't automatically give plastic bags out. We also stock bio bags for composting and hope that soon we'll start using bags that customers can compost.” Woodland Hardware

Thanks retailers for all your hard work helping the Barn to go plastic bag free.
